Sodium silicate, a.k.a. sodium metasilicate, silican, soluble glass, water glass, sodium water glass, dryseq, sodium siliconate, etc. refers to one of several compounds that contain sodium oxide, Na2O, and silica, Si2O, or a mixture of sodium silicates varying ratios of SiO2 to Na2O, solids contents, and viscosity. Sodium silicate has the molecular formula Na2O3Si and exists as a white to greenish solid without any odor or with a musty smell. The product is insoluble in alcohol, partially soluble in methanol and diethyl ether, and easily dissolves in water. Boiling point of sodium silicate is 2355 °C.
Sodium silicate is irritating, toxic, corrosive and highly flammable. The product is a strong alkaline irritant that causes severe irritation of eyes, skin, the gastrointestinal tract and of upper respiratory tract. A contact of the product with eyes causes inflammation and/or serious burns with possible damage to the eyes tissues.
Dermal contact with sodium silicate produces pain, itching, redness, severe irritation or burns. Ingestion of the product leads to nausea, oral mucosa, upper airway, burns to the lips and tongue, vomiting and diarrhea, esophagus and occasionally stomach. Burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting, lung damage are among the most common symptoms of sodium silicate inhalation.
Sodium silicate finds applications for industrial, agricultural and manufacturing uses. The product is utilized as a substitute for phosphates in detergents, as a deflocculent in the manufacturing of potters and ceramics. Moreover, sodium silicate is widely utilized in waste-paper deinking formulations, in clay slip casting, in the production of raw clay and other mineral slurries. Furthermore, sodium silicate is used for many different purposes, including washing eggs, peeling fruits. Besides, the product is used in the textiles processing industry.
