Raney nickel, a silvery odorless fine-grained solid with molecular formula AlNi, is used as a reagent and catalyst in organic chemistry. It was developed in 1926 by Murray Raney, an American engineer.

Raney nickel is used as a catalyst in hydrogenation of functional groups such as nitro, nitrile, carbonyl, oxime groups. The product is able to hydrogenate almost all functional groups and, moreover, to be hydrogenated. That the reason why Raney nickel is a non-specific catalyst.

The catalyst also takes part in sorbitol, rubber additives, pesticide intermediates, etc. manufacturing. In case Raney nickel’s pH is below 5.5, its usage in acid reactions becomes impossible.

Swallowing or inhaling of the product may cause side effects such as eye redness and pain; as well as skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of Raney nickel fumes may cause anosmia, fever, chills, cough, weakness, chest pain, etc. Besides, multiple tests have proved it to be a possible human carcinogen.

Raney nickel is covered in the study Raney Nickel (CAS 7440-02-0) Market Research Report 2013. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks Raney nickel market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current Raney nickel prices in the market.
