N-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP), also known as N-Methylpyrrolidone, 2-Pyrrolidinone, M-Pyrol, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, etc., is an aprotic solvent with the molecular formula C5H9NO and molecular weight 99.13. N-methyl-pyrrolidone is a colorless or light yellow liquid with an amine-like smell. The liquid is miscible in ethyl acetate, water, chloroform, benzene, ketones and lower alcohols. The boiling point of the product is 202 °C. NMP is chemically and thermally stable. The handling of NMP is easy.
N-methyl-pyrrolidone is produced by the condensation of butyrolactone with methylamine and by high-pressure synthesis from acetylene and formaldehyde.
N-methyl-pyrrolidone is a toxic and irritating product. It can cause the irritation and/or damage of eyes. Prolonged contact with NMP produces conjunctivitis. Furthermore, the product may produce pre-existing dermatitis condition of the skin and its inflammation. The ingestion of the product leads to gastrointestinal discomfort. Inhaled n-methyl-pyrrolidone is likely to entail respiratory irritation with further possible lung damage.
N-methyl-pyrrolidone is utilized for the synthesis of textile auxiliaries, agrochemicals, stabilizers, specialty inks, pharmaceuticals, plasticizers. Besides, NMP is used for the production of SBR latex and printed circuit board. N-methyl-pyrrolidone is also utilized in the desulfurization of gases and to recover pure hydrocarbons.
