N-methyl-pyrrolidone is a colorless or light yellow liquid with an amine-like smell. The liquid is miscible in ethyl acetate, water, chloroform, benzene, ketones and lower alcohols. The boiling point of the product is 202 °C. NMP is chemically and thermally stable. The handling of NMP is easy.
N-methyl-pyrrolidone is produced by the condensation of butyrolactone with methylamine and by high-pressure synthesis from acetylene and formaldehyde.
