Isobutanol (isopropylcarbinol, 2-Methyl-1-propanol, Isobutylalkohol, 2-Methylpropan-1-ol, Iso-butyl alcohol, 1-Hydroxymethylpropane, butanol, 1-Propanol, 2-methyl-, i-Butanol, i-Butyl alcohol, 2-Methyl propanol, 2-Methylpropanol, 2-Methylpropyl alcohol, Alcool isobutylique, 2-Methylpropanol-1, Fermentation butyl alcohol) refers to an organic compound with the molecular formula C4H10O and the molecular weight 74.12.

Isobutanol is a form of lightweight alcohol produced from natural and petrochemical sources. Isobutanol exists as a colorless, oily liquid with a sweet and musty smell. The boiling point of the product is 108 °C. Isobutanol is miscible with alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and ethers. Isobutanol is obtained naturally through the fermentation of carbohydrates and industrially by the carbonylation of propylene.

Isobutanol is used mainly as a solvent. Its common use is as a component of paint coatings such as lacquers. Isobutanol is also utilized in the production of synthetic rubber, pharmaceuticals, and as a dehydrating agent, since it only partially mixes with water. The product is seen as a supplement or substitute for gasoline. Other uses for isobutanol include as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of esters, in textiles manufacturing, and as a cleaning or polishing compound.

Isobutanol may cause eyes, skin and respiratory tract irritation. Vapors of the product may cause drowsiness and dizziness.

Isobutanol market is covered in the study Isobutanol (CAS 78-83-1) Market Research Report 2013. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks isobutanol market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current isobutanol prices in the market.
