Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid with the formula C8H10N4O2 acting as a stimulant drug and a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Caffeine is naturally found in the leaves and seeds of many plants; it's also produced artificially and added to certain foods.

To date, caffeine is mainly used in food and drugs – from soft drinks, tea, chocolate, and coffee, to headache medication and "pep pills".

Caffeine is especially effective for headache, including migraine and headache following surgery, and is likely effective for mental alertness. Caffeine can possibly delay the onset of Parkinson's disease, prevent type 2 diabetes (when consumed from coffee or tea), promote weight loss when given with other drugs; etc.

Caffeine is also used as a decongestant and appetite suppressant. Controversial uses of this drug include killing skin fungi, improving sperm mobility, and enhancing the toxic effect of chemicals during cancer therapy.

The effects of caffeine on people depend on many factors including their size, weight and health and also whether they are used to taking it, and the amount taken.

To be noticed is that the use of any drug (including caffeine) always carries some risk — even medications can produce unwanted side effects.

Annual consumption of caffeine is estimated at 120,000 tonnes globally, making it the world's most popular psychoactive substance.

Natural caffeine market is covered in the study Natural Caffeine (CAS 58-08-2) Market Research Report 2012. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks natural caffeine market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current natural caffeine prices in the market.
