Ammonium thiosulfate is a white or colourless crystalline powder/solid with an ammonia odor. Its chemical formula is H₈N₂O₃S₂. The substance is easily soluble in either hot or cold water, and poorly soluble in acetone. Ammonium thiosulfate is very vulnerable to heat and inconsistent with aluminum and magnesium powder. While reacting with strong oxidizers, for example, nitrates, chlorates and nitrites, the product releases toxic ammonia, sulfur trioxide gases and hydrogen sulfide.

Ammonium thiosulphate is required as a component of photographic fixer; it works faster than sodium thiosulfate fixers. It is also used in the manufacture of sulphur and nitrogen fertilizers as well as acts as an efficiency enhancer for other kinds of fertilizers. Ammonium thiosulphate also is employed as a shielding effect agent, major constituente of silvering electrobath, analytical and bactericidal reagent. It can also be utilized as an additive reducing very dangerous furans and dioxins in coal-waste mixtures.
