Usage:Medication: topical antipruritic, medication (vet): has been used as a mild local anesthetic, antiseptic & internally as a carminative & gastric sedative menthol.

Menthol crystals (menthol, racemic menthol, peppermint camphor, menthol natural, etc.) are organic compounds that are found in mint plants. Besides, menthol crystals can be processed synthetically. The compounds exist as a colorless solid with peppermint odor and granules. The product with the molecular formula C10H20O is soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, petroleum ether. Menthol crystals easily dissolve in glacial acetic acid and are slightly soluble in water. Boiling point of menthol crystals is 212 °C.

Menthol crystals find application mainly in the medicine, pharmaceutical, cosmetics industries. The product is a commonly known mild anesthetic and anti-irritant that produces a cool sensation on the skin. Menthol can be found in candies, mouthwashes, toothpastes, oral spays, cold sore medications, chewing gums, creams, lotions and ointments to relieve itching, aches and pains. Moreover, menthol crystals are utilized in some tobacco products as a flavoring agent.

Menthol crystals cause inflammation or severe damage of eyes and skin. Creams that contain menthol can produce hypersensitivity reactions. The product can lead to dermatitis or to its pre-existing conditions. Ingestion of menthol crystals may cause vomiting, drowsiness, nausea, etc. Prolonged exposure can produce diseases of the airways and even cumulative health effects. Inhalation of high dust concentrations may result in changes in the functions of lungs.
