BMI View: The Swiss telecoms market takes advantage of high-income households and a willingness to pay for top services which drive ARPU, but the dominance of incumbent Swisscom remains a concern. Price cutting has failed, with operators, including new entrant Salt Mobile, competing on services, but Swisscom continues to call the shots, as highlighted by its move for convergence to consolidate its leadership in a saturated market. We believe that the market will be driven by a growth in premium services in 2016 and beyond as new subscriber organic growth prospects are diminished due to a high degree of penetration and market saturation.
  • There were 10.81mn mobile subscribers in Switzerland at the end of 2015, representing y-o-y growth of 1.03%. Swisscom continues to dominate the market, with a share of more than 61%.
  • The focus will remain on premium services and upselling value-added services to existing clients, and growth in the market will be driven by a relatively strong uptake of 4G services in 2016.
  • Swisscom is testing LTE-Advanced Pro services, scheduled to launch in 2017. Initial tests have demonstrated a 1Gbps download speed.
