Improvements in broadband coverage and speed are vital to the future of the telecoms industry in Sri Lanka, and there is pressure on SLT to complete its fibre-optic network on time by end 2016.In 2013, SLT secured a 10-year licence from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) to operate Sri Lanka's national National Backbone Network (NBN) which is to drive the SMART revolution within the country The company has already lain over 20.000km of fibre network and the roll-out is ongoing. Consequently, competition in the business services sector is developing with SLT having launched a national cloud platform, dubbed Akaza, to offer cloud computing services for enterprises in December 2015 while Dialog bough a 26% share in the e-learning content provider HeadStart (Pvt) Ltd. in January 2016.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

Over 80% of mobile phone subscriptions remain prepaid which limits the market for premium services, and average ARPU not increased although 3G and 4G services have been launched as operators compete aggressively on price.

Consolidation is likely in the mobile market with telecoms tax eroding operator revenues and consequently, SLT and Dialog are looking to acquire Hutchinson Lanka and Airtel, repestively. Dialog Axiata continues to dominate the mobile market with an estimated 41.8% share of subscriptions in H115.
