BMI View: Magyar Telekom has partnered with Fon to launch a free Wi-Fi service. Customers will be able to access the internet outside their homes without any data limits or excess charges, in nearly 2,000 localities in Hungary and some 20 countries worldwide over Fon's Wi-Fi network. BMI believes Fon will be able to rapidly monetise these pervasive advanced on-the-go value-added services, creating valuable new revenue stream for the Hungarian incumbent.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments
  • Just 40,000 new mobile subscriptions were added in 9M15, taking the total to 10.929mn. This was a little below expectations and we estimate 10.972mn by the end of the year. The focus is on 3G/4G migration and customer numbers will reach 7.255mn by 2020.
  • In the wireline arena, the focus is on rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 and fibre high-speed accesses, over which operators can deliver multiple high-value services. Triple-play services are in demand, but low income rural areas will be hard to penetrate. There were 3.214mn broadband accesses by end-2015, rising to 4.041mn by 2020.
