BMI View: Two new mobile network operators plan to launch in the near future, but with Vodafone mulling a withdrawal and multiplay operator UPC recording only tepid interest in its MVNO services, prospects are not good for new infrastructure-led players. Mobile data usage is trending upwards but has yet to generate the kind of revenues needed to offset declining voice and messaging revenues. However, tripleplay uptake at Telekom, Invitel and UPC highlight the potential posed by convergence.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments
  • Just 27,000 new mobile subscriptions were added in H115, taking the total to 10.92mn. This was in line with expectations and we forecast 10.98mn by the end of the year. The focus is on 3G/4G migration and customer numbers will reach 4.61mn in 2015 and 5.72mn by 2019.
  • In the wireline arena, the focus is on rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 and fibre high-speed accesses, over which operators can deliver multiple high-value services. Triple-play services are in demand, but lowincome rural areas will be hard to penetrate. There will be 3.21mn broadband accesses by end-2015, rising to 3.68mn by 2019.
