Smart Grid Review - January 2015

Summary

A substantial number of smart grid developments took place in December 2014, including product launches, fundraising, and the announcement and completion of contracts and projects. Two major acquisitions took place in December. The first involved EnerNOC, a provider of energy intelligence software, acquiring Pulse Energy, a company that provides customer engagement software for utilities. This acquisition will enhance customer engagement (for both commercial and industrial customers) for utilities, and will boost EnerNOC’s product offerings to utilities. Another major acquisition was that of Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale (Terna), a transmission grid operator, entering into a memorandum of understanding to acquire high-voltage electricity transmission grids from Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Societa Elettrica Ferroviaria (all companies belonging to the FS Group). A total of 17 contracts were completed between November and December 2014. Some of the key players that won contracts were Alstom T&D India, AddEnergie Technologies, Open Systems International, Siemens, Eltel Networks, Prysmian, Aclara Technologies, Survalent Technology, and Maingate. Three companies engaged in fundraising in December. SunPower Corporation and Energous Corporation raised funds through private public offerings, and Edison DC Systems raised funds through venture financing. Other announcements were made regarding appointments, management changes and investment. A total of 10 projects were reported in December.
