BMI View: A deterioration in economic sentiment in 2015 resulted in a contraction in consumer electronics device spending in Oman. We expect conditions to normalise over the course of 2016, but anticipate subdued performance for the year as a whole as the prolonged oil price slump continues to weigh on confidence. The outlook is however stronger from 2017, when we expect the economic environment to strengthen, which will release pent-up demand from deferred upgrade and replacement spending during 2015-2016.

Latest Updates And Industry Developments
  • Computer Hardware Sales: USD257mn in 2015 to USD291mn in 2020, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.6%. Hybrid notebooks are expected to be the outperforming device category, but will be a relatively small part of the overall sales mix.
  • AV Sales: USD179mn in 2015 to USD190mn in 2020, at a CAGR of 1.0%. AV segment performance should improve over the medium term, particularly in 2018 when the FIFA World Cup triggers TV set upgrades.
  • Handset Sales: USD723mn in 2015 to USD766mn in 2020, at a CAGR of 1.2%. The handset market was the most dynamic segment during the smartphone boom, but a combination of saturation and price erosion is expected to see the market move to a much slower growth trajectory over the medium term.
