BMI View: The tourism industry is very well established in Hong Kong. Supporting infrastructure, including transport networks, hotels and restaurants and retail and leisure facilities are all very well developed and continue to attract significant investment. Arrivals have grown strongly in recent years, benefiting from Hong Kong's position as a major travel and business hub. However, we are now seeing a slowdown in inbound travel from key market China which will depress overall growth rates. Regardless, Hong Kong will remain one of the most popular global tourism destinations throughout the five year forecast period to 2020.

Key Updates And Forecasts
  • As the Hong Kong dollar strengthens against the yuan and becomes a more expensive holiday destination for visitors from main market China, we are seeing a downturn in the number of travellers from the mainland which is depressing the overall growth rate. As such arrivals are now expected to grow by an average of 4% annually between 2016 and 2020.
