BMI View: We expect the tourism industry to pick up in 2016, after a sluggish performance in 2015, following the surge in arrivals for the World Cup in 2014 and the expected influx for the Rio Olympics in 2016. The slowdown in tourist arrivals will be exacerbated by economic weakness in neighbouring Argentina, a key source market. We anticipate that arrivals will pick up strongly in 2016, benefiting the hospitality industry, particularly in Rio and its environs. Over the longer term, we expect investment into Brazil's tourism market to slow, in reaction to the flood of investment ahead of 2014 and 2016. As a result, we do not anticipate strong growth levels over the remainder of the forecast period.

Key Updates and Forecasts:

We have raised our tourist arrivals growth forecast for 2016 to 7.4%, to 5.49mn. This reflects the surge of arrivals for the Rio Olympics. Our positive prognosis surrounding this event is being borne out by reports of strong advance bookings in Rio hotels, which we expect will feed through to benefit other sectors of the hospitality
