In 2014, we believe that Ankara will spend up to USD14.5bn on defence, which is a noticeable reduction from the USD15.6bn that it spent on defence in 2013. Although we expect the 2014 defence budget to be lower than that for 2013, we believe that the defence budget will once again increase in 2015, forecast it to be USD15.4bn. We expect a considerable increase to be observed into 2016, with the defence budget reaching USD16.6bn. The final two years of the forecast period will see the defence budget increase to USD18.2bn in 2017 and USD19.9bn and 2018.

We have given Turkey an overall security risk rating of 67 for Q314. On average, the country has scored an overall security risk rating of 65 for the period December 2007 to Q314. Turkey is at a low risk of becoming embroiled in a major interstate conflict. That said, the country does have a slightly heightened risk of experiencing a major terrorist attack, although it enjoys a comparatively lower risk of experiencing major criminal activity.
