BMI View: Following the landslide victory of Narendra Modi and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India's general elections in May 2014, India is poised for an era of a more assertive foreign policy stance, which might boost defence-related activities. In addition, after high level defence and security dialogues between India and both Japan and South Korea in Q114, Japan-India defence ties are getting stronger with the USA and Japan highlighting in April 2014 a trilateral dialogue with India for 'peace and economic prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and around the globe'. Increased defence cooperation between India and the two East Asian powers is set to rattle China, with Beijing already expressing concern over New Delhi being 'courted' by Tokyo and Seoul. Like Japan and South Korea, India too is wary of an emerging China and the threat this poses to its own security.

Enhanced defence and security ties with Japan and South Korea will be manifested by increased defence sales, joint ventures (JVs), joint military exercises and security partnerships that look to address global and regional tensions. Following Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to India in January 2014, it was announced that the pending sale of 15 ShinaMaywa US-2 amphibious patrol aircraft- a topic of interest for India since 2011- is moving forward, with a deal expected to be finalized in June 2014. The second round of negotiations was held between Amitabh Kant, the new Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion secretary and his Japanese counterparts. This deal is expected to be worth USD1.65bn. During the bilateral talks, India invited Japan to participate in the annual 'Malabar' Naval exercises which India conducts with the United States.
