This report shows inpatient procedure numbers for surgeries on the esophagus reported by all German hospitals between 2006 and 2014.

The report focuses on (1) incision of the esophagus, (2) esophagostomy as an independent procedure, (3) local excision and destruction of diseased tissue of the esophagus; with information how the tissue was destructed: electrocautery; laser coagulation; thermocoagulation; cryocoagulation; photodynamic therapy; radiofrequency ablation; microwave ablation; irreversible electroporation, (4) partial esophagectomy without restoring continuity, (5) partial esophagectomy with restoration of continuity: e.g. esophagectomy with / without of proximal gastrectomy, (6) (total) oesophagectomy without restoring continuity, (7) (total) esophagectomy with restoration of continuity, (8) reconstruction of the esophageal passage (as an independent procedure), (9) reconstruction of the esophageal passage in the case of esophageal atresia or congenital tracheoesophageal fistula and (10) other esophagus surgeries. A lot of additional information is given if the procedures were conducted as open surgeries, laparoscopic surgeries or thorascopic surgeries.

Over 200 specific procedures are presented.

The report provides a general overview of procedure numbers and procedures per 100.000 inhabitants per federal state. Furthermore the “Top 5 performer” - hospitals with the most esophagus surgeries- are identified. These data will support strategic business decisions and guide sales activities.
