BMI View: Kenya's shipping industry looks to be in a strong position going into 2016 and over the short term, with growth at its key port of Mombasa rising from 6.23% in 2016 to 6.45% in 2017.The port has been recognised as the most efficient entry into the East African region and some crucial investment in expansion should help to reinforce Kenya's importance as a leading shipping hub in the region.

Healthy predictions for the country's economy as well as those of neighbouring countries, which rely on Kenya as a trade gateway, will impact positively on demand at the country's ports.

Kenya's import and export growth will remain in negative figures until 2017 when they will strengthen as total trade picks up. Manufactured goods and fuel will remain the country's most important imports with growth continuing through the short to medium term with a predicted USD10217mn of goods imported in 2019. In the short term, climate anomalies continue to threaten agricultural output in the country with exports in 2016 shrinking by 1.82%. The outlook for agricultural exports should improve, with the figure set at USD742mn by 2019.
