BMI View: Israel's domestic and regional security situation remains volatile. The civil war in nearby Syria continues to worsen. There is still the possibility of confrontation with Iran, and it is unclear if pro-peace centrists will be able to influence the government's hawkish stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We expect Israel to spend USD17.7bn on defence in 2014. In late March 2014, it was revealed that the Obama administration would extend foreign military financing to Israel up to 2028. The US provides around USD3.1bn to Israel annually in loans and grants to supplement its defence budget which it will continue to receive annually up to 2028.

In March 2014, the exemption of orthodox Jews from compulsory military service was repealed by Israel's parliament. The law requiring members of the orthodox community to perform military service will enter into force in 2017.
