The function of a PAT is comparable to that of any turbine, to convert kinetic and pressure energy of the fluid into mechanical energy of the runner. They are commonly commercialized as composite pump and motor/generator units, coupled by a fixed shaft to an asynchronous induction type motor unit.Pumps as turbines (PAT) is a known concept of using excess flow and pressure to run a pump in reverse to generate electricity. PAT has twin modes to enable them to pump as well as generate electricity. When a pump is used in turbine mode it is typically only 3-5% less efficient than when operating as a pump. Pumps as Turbines (PAT) are usually for installations <1000 Megawatts, initial investment costs are low, and recoverable within 6-12 Months. Efficiency can reach up to 85%, with installation and maintenance performed by relatively unskilled labour.
