BMI View: Japan remains home to a life segment which is both massive and one of the faster growing within the developed world. Nevertheless, the latest wave of deal-making suggests that the majors are not satisfied with the profitability or prospects for growth in the domestic life insurance market. Structural headwinds continue to constrain the non-life segment, where the majors are also looking at overseas opportunities.

Key Updates And Forecasts

We continue to look for growth in life insurance premiums of around 4-5% annually through the forecast period, notwithstanding that some companies have reported double-digit rises in new business in recent months. Growth will be driven by the increasing demand for retirement income solutions; the established position of the life insurance industry as a provider of social security in Japan; the low rates of return available from competing investment opportunities; and innovation by the life insurers in terms of product design, distribution and brand.
