BMI View: Despite a lower oil price environment, rising energy efficiency and import constraints will prevent weaker prices from increasing oil and gas consumption. We also note Taiwan's shares in the regional refined fuels exports market will come under growing competition from refining capacity expansions in the region's emerging economies, which will moderate their need for imports in the medium to long term.

Latest Updates and Key Forecasts
  • Taiwan's state-owned CPC Corporation is expected to receive its first barrel of crude oil from Chad in 2019, reports Focus Taiwan. The company started investing in the Chad oil field in 2006 and production is scheduled to commence in 2019.
  • Taiwan's oil and gas reserves are expected to remain very insignificant throughout our review period. Between 2015 and 2024, oil reserves are forecast to shrink by 22.5% and reach 1.86mn bbl, while gas reserves are expected to decline by 43% and stand at 3.23bcm.
  • The closure of the Kaosiung refinery will cut Taiwan's refining capacity by 16.8% to 1,090,000b/d from 2016 onwards. This will turn the country into a small net refined products importer as the output fails to meet the demand.
