BMI View: Economic growth, supportive demographics and a weak oil price environment will support consumption growth in Indonesia. However, a tough regulatory environment and weak oil prices will remain an impediment to hydrocarbon production over the next decade. More comprehensive reforms are required to turn Indonesia's upstream segment around.

Latest Updates and Key Forecasts
  • Indonesia's crude oil production will increase moderately over 2015-2016, as a result of additional output from the start-up of new fields, though this will not be sufficient to reverse the long-term decline in its crude output. This will see Indonesia become a net importer of crude oil from 2020.
  • Indonesia's refining capacity is set to expand by 48.3% over the next decade as a result of large upgrade works to take place at several of the country's aging refineries, and the expected start-up of the Bontang refinery in 2020. This will reduce Indonesia's refined fuels deficit, though it will remain a sizeable net importer to 2024.
