China dominates the planned oil and chemical storage capacity addition globally

Global oil and chemicals storage industry is expected to witness strong growth in the next four years. Most of this growth is driven by Asia Pacific markets. Growing demand for crude oil in these countries is driving most of these countries to construct new oil and chemicals storage terminals. Across the globe, 76 new storage terminals are expected to start operations between 2013 and 2017. Of these, 46 are planned in Asia Pacific, 9 in Europe and 29 in rest of the regions. By 2017, the global planned storage terminals capacity is expected to increase to 60,519.9 mcm. China will lead the growth in this planned storage capacity with 17,403.0 mcm planned capacity in 2017.

China, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Republic of Korea are the top five countries which are expected to contribute 66.3% to the global planned storage capacity in 2017.

Increasing LNG demand in Europe will drive Middle East and Africa's Liquefaction Industry

Middle East and Africa's LNG liquefaction industry is set to benefit from the increasing LNG demand in Europe. Europe's LNG imports are expected to increase significantly in the near term, considering the region's planned regasification capacity addition of 4,294.3 bcf (accounting for around 34.7% of the global planned regasification capacity) by 2017. European countries plan to diversify their natural gas import sources, mainly to lessen their dependence on Russian pipeline gas. In this regard, Europe is looking to increase LNG imports from Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Qatar and Algeria. In 2012, Middle East and Africa had the largest LNG liquefaction capacity in the world, accounting for around 55% of the global liquefaction capacity. The planned liquefaction capacity in Middle East and Africa will reach 23.7 mmty by 2017 accounting for around 11% of the global planned liquefaction capacity by 2017.

The material was prepared in September, 2013.
