BMI View: Uganda's construction sector is forecasted to grow at 7.1% y-o-y in 2016, increasing to 10.1% in 2020 off the back of oil production flows, and remaining at an average of 7.7% over our 10-year forecast up to 2024. Central to this growth will be the development in oil infrastructure, which will have a positive effect on the domestic economy as well as boost regional integration. The widening fiscal deficit, allegations of corruption in government, and the dominance of Chinese state-owned enterprises will continue to deter potential investors.

  • We continue to forecast 7.1% real growth over 2016, 7.9% over the next five years and 7.7% over our full 10-year forecast period. In 2020 Uganda will experience 10.1% real growth off the back of oil production, before growing by 6.3% in 2021 due to base effect. It will average 7.8% between 2022 and 2024.
  • The main supporter of growth will be the development of oil infrastructure, which, once established, will be supported by upgraded regional logistics networks and the addition of hydropower to the struggling power supply.
