BMI View: After a strong performance in 2015, Kuwait's construction industry is set for a slight slowdown in 2016. Low oil prices and still difficult, albeit improving, business environment remain the key factors weighing on the industry's growth prospects over the short term. We forecast growth rates to pick up in the medium- to long term, supported by the country's efforts to diversify its economy away from overdependence on oil, as well as gradual improvements in its business environment.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends
  • Kuwait's construction industry value was an estimated USD3.5bn in 2015 and we forecast this figure to reach USD6.5bn by the end of our review period in 2025, resulting in 4% average annual growth rate per annum.
  • In May 2016, the government of Kuwait approved a request by the Ministry of Public Works to finalise a contract with Turkish firm Limak Construction for a passenger building at Kuwait International Airport.
  • In May 2016, Kuwait Times reported the country's metro project was still under consideration, according to a letter sent by the Partnership Technical Bureau to an unspecified state department. The 160km project, to be executed in five phases, is reportedly expected to be completed over 23 years.
  • In May 2016, the South Korean and Kuwaiti governments signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly build a USD4bn smart city in Kuwait, reported Pulse. The city is called South Saad Al Abdullah New City and will cover 59sq km. The project will be built in the west of the country and will have 25,000 residential units.
