Throughout 2005–08, the Brazilian construction materials market experienced strong growth before recording a sharp decline in 2009 due to the global financial crisis. Factors that contributed to the decline of the construction materials market were decreased private sector investment, and a decline in the export of several materials, which increased domestic market supply and drove prices down. The growth in construction activity in the infrastructure, residential and commercial markets in 2010 is expected to increase demand for construction materials, and consequently prices are expected to rise. The FIFA World Cup in 2014, and the Olympics in 2016, both hosted by Brazil, have resulted in substantial investment in infrastructure in order to satisfy the demand of foreign visitors.
