BMI View: Morocco's agriculture sector holds significant potential, particularly the dairy, poultry and sugar industries. The dairy sector benefits from growing interest from international dairy companies and is likely to enjoy strong growth in the coming years. Our optimism is bolstered by the government-initiated Green Morocco Plan, which is likely to see increased investment in an effort to reduce the industry's weather-related production risks out to 2020. We believe that the twin strategies of producing high-yield and market-related agriculture, as well as improving on its existing water conservation program, will yield significant results in the medium-to-long term.

Key Forecasts
  • Wheat production growth to 2018/19: 62.0% to 5.4mn tonnes. This will come on the back of steady growth in the country's wheat demand, a result of strong economic growth. Increased planting and productivity gains will also help to support output. The spectacular growth rate is due to base effects following 2012/13's drop in production.
  • Corn consumption growth to 2019: 33.5% to 2.7mn tonnes. Demand growth will mainly be driven by a steadily expanding domestic livestock sector.
