Luxembourg (BIL) launched SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) services for its customers in Luxembourg, enabling instant fund transfers between bank accounts in 10 seconds. As of April 2021 there are five participants in the SCT Inst system in Luxembourg, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • To benefit from the growing preference for alternative payments, banks and payment service providers are launching new payment solutions. In May 2019, Apple launched its digital wallet solution Apple Pay in Luxembourg. The solution enables users to make in-store, online, and in-app payments. In April 2020, payment and money transfer solution Satispay was launched in Luxembourg. Users can top up their Satispay wallet balance via a linked bank account and use it to conduct online and in-store payments. Meanwhile, Joompay is a Luxembourg-based fund transfer solution launched in November 2020. It allows users to make fund transfers using the recipient’s &Paytag, email address, or mobile phone number. Users can fund their transfers via a linked bank account, debit card, or credit card.
  • The advent of digital-only banks in Luxembourg is likely to further accelerate the shift towards electronic payments. Germany-based digital-only bank N26 launched in Luxembourg in December 2016, enabling users to open an account digitally and receive a Mastercard-branded debit card. In June 2020, N26 launched Business Metal - a premium account for businesses. Other challenger banks operating in the nation include Netherlands-based bunq, Finland-based Ferratum Bank, and UK-based Revolut. In December 2020, Revolut launched a money management tool, while in February 2021 it launched QR code payment services for business customers, allowing them to accept QR code payments at their stores.
