The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is an integrated energy utility. The authority carries out electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity. PREPA is a public corporation of the Government of Puerto Rico. The authority is empowered to enter into contracts, acquires properties, raise fund and issue bonds on behalf of the government. It is also responsible for the establishment of an appropriate rate structure for the electricity services. It uses diverse fuel sources for electricity generation including fuel oil, natural gas, hydro source and coal. The authority distributes electricity to approximately 1,353,550 clients including residential, industrial and commercial customers. The authority serves clients in 26 districts through approximately 30 customer services offices and seven regional offices throughout Puerto Rico. PREPA is headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The authority’s investment focuses on improving reliability and efficiency of electricity infrastructure with various network maintenance initiatives. To this end, PREPA has planned budget capex worth of US$64.77 million for transmission facilities and US$86.67 million for distribution network.
