Hill-Rom Medical Device Company Intelligence Report
Hill-Rom Holdings Inc was incorporated in August 1969 and is headquartered in Batesville, Indiana, US. The company is a leading manufacturer and provider of patient support systems, mobility and handling solutions, non-invasive therapeutic products for a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions, medical equipment rentals and information technology (IT) solutions. Its portfolio includes beds, therapy surfaces, stretchers, patient lifts and slings, healthcare furniture, communication systems, surgical columns, modular headwalls and devices to treat deep vein thrombosis and respiratory problems. It is also a provider of medical equipment outsourcing and asset management services. Hill-Rom’s products and services are used in hospitals, extended care facilities and the home.

Hill-Rom conducts its business through three segments:
  • North America Acute Care – focuses on hospital patient support and near-patient technologies, as well as on health information communications technology solutions and surgical accessories.
  • North America Post-Acute Care – focuses on a variety of settings outside of the hospital, including long-term acute care, extended care and home care, as well as respiratory care products.
  • International – offers similar products as the North America businesses, but in regions outside the US and Canada.
Hill-Rom operates an extensive distribution network, supplying products mainly to acute and extended care healthcare facilities worldwide, through both a direct sales force and distributors. The company’s distribution network consists of approximately 190 North American and 25 international service centres, and around 1,270 North American and 260 international service professionals, providing technical support and delivery.

Recent noteworthy business developments include the February 2012 acquisition of Volker, a Germany-based provider of long-term and acute care bed frames, surfaces and furniture - a move which is expected to strengthen Hill-Rom’s channels and product offerings in Europe and worldwide.

In September 2011, to complement its October 2008 acquisition of Liko - a supplier and developer of lifts and slings - Hill-Rom acquired Liko France SAS and Liko Care AG, the distributors of Liko patient mobility products in France and Switzerland. In 2010, Hill-Rom re-organised its regional sales operations to more directly serve its patients’ and customers’ needs. The acquisition of the Liko distributors was another step in the company’s strategy for international expansion, particularly in European markets.

Hill-Rom employs approximately 6,230 people worldwide and operates manufacturing facilities in the US, France, Mexico, Australia and Sweden. It also operates a number of other facilities, warehouse distribution centres and service centres throughout the US, Canada, Western Europe, Mexico, Australia, the Middle East and the Far East. In the fiscal year ended 30th September 2011, the company reported net revenues of US$1,591.7million, which included US$1,119.0 million from capital sales and US$472.7 million from rental services.
