BMI View: Improved regulatory clarity, strong government support and ambitious targets for nonhydropower renewables will make France one of our European renewables outperformers over the next decade.

The passing of the energy transition in bill will help catalyse investor interest, supporting our upbeat growth trajectory for the sector over our 10-year forecast period.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends
  • France hosted the UN COP21 climate conference in December 2015 on the back of having announced ambitious renewables growth targets in November 2015. The government aims to have deployed a cumulative 24GW of onshore wind and solar power capacity by 2018, and 36-43GW of capacity by 2023.
  • A 63.2GW capacity cap on nuclear power in line with the Energy Transition Bill that was passed in the lower and the upper house in July 2015 coupled with the decline of thermal-fired power generation means that renewables will play an important role in the French power mix over the next decade.
