Profile of Baidu (Update - Aug 2013)
Company background

This is an updated edition of this profile which was last published in March 2012.

Baidu is a Chinese-language search engine that enables users to find websites, audio, video and image files based on key word search terms. The company offers a variety of other online community services including blogging, instant messaging, a collaborative encyclopaedia, mobile search and more. Listed on NASDAQ, it is one of the most prominent Chinese Internet companies. As Google is in North America, it is relevant to business media companies active in China as Baidu.com is absorbing large segments of advertising spend which would once have naturally been directed towards speciality publishers and B2B online platforms. So, maintaining a solid understanding of what the company is doing is vital to any business competing for B2B marketing spend in the Chinese market.

According to market research firm, Analysys International, in the second quarter of 2013, Baidu was the market leading search engine in China with a 79% market share. Google was a distant second with 14%. As of 30th July 2013, Baidu.com placed fifth on Alexa.com’s Global Top 500, a list which ranks websites based on user traffic and Alexa.com ranks Baidu number one within China.

Beijing-based Baidu was founded in 2000 and had 20,877 employees at the end of 2012. The company listed on NASDAQ in August 2005. Revenues in 2012 were US$3.6 billion (RMB 22.3 billion) – that represents a huge year-on-year increase of 54%. Net income attributable to the company in the year also jumped 58%, reaching US$1.7 billion (RMB 10.5 billion). Diluted earnings per share in the period were RMB 29.83 (US$4.79). The company’s market capitalization is approximately US$45 billion.

Baidu generates almost all of its revenues from online marketing services which almost entirely consist of paid search advertising. Baidu’s active online marketing customers increased 22% to about 596,000 in 2012 and revenue per customer jumped to US$5,987 (RMB 37,300) – a rise of 26% compared to 2011
