Company background

This report is an update of the original profile published by BSG in November 2011.

Based in Hangzhou, Alibaba.com was founded by Jack Ma in 1999. Alibaba.com operates two key online B2B marketplaces, an International Marketplace and a China Marketplace. Alibaba.com’s English-language International Marketplace serves to bring together international importers and largely China-based suppliers by offering an online sourcing platform. The China Marketplace is focused on facilitating domestic B2B trade within China.

Each marketplace is segmented into more than 40 industry verticals covering major consumer product categories such as apparel, beauty, electronics, gifts, office supplies and security products. In 2011, Alibaba.com strongly increased its number of registered users – rising by 24% to a total of 76,332,163. This figure includes users on both its China and International Marketplaces. The International Marketplace accounts for over 25.5 million of the total users.

Paying users decreased from 765,363 at the end of 2011 to 753,955 in March 2012 – a 1.5% decrease. China Gold Suppliers (paid users on its International Marketplace) fell 12% to 87,544. Paid members on the China Marketplace held steady at 658,770. Alibaba.com reported a total of 79,786,659 registered users as of 31st March 2012.
