Industry report - Japan round-up (Update - Sep 2013)
Executive summary

This is an updated edition of this report which was last published in May 2012.

In 2012, the Japanese economy performed considerably better than in 2011 at its GDP grew 2.0%. In 2011, Japan’s economy contracted by 0.57%. More encouraging growth is forecast in the year ahead. The IMF projects that the Japanese economy will post modest growth of 1.6% in 2013 and 1.4% in 2014.

In 2012, Japan’s exports totalled US$741 billion, while imports were US$822.5 billion. In terms of Japan’s major trading partners in 2012, the country recorded a trade surplus with the US, and a deficit of US$1.6 billion with the EU. Japan’s trade deficit with China doubled to a record US$40.9 billion.

In a bid to kick-start the economy in December 2012, Japan’s newly elected government led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe introduced a series of fiscal policies to encourage growth of the country’s long-stagnant economy. By early 2013, Abe’s stimulus package totalled US$1.4 trillion with the aim boosting asset prices, exports and consumer spending, while weakening the yen.

Additionally, the government will increase total spending on its earthquake reconstruction programme to US$260 billion, up from the original budget of US$200 billion, through to 2015. The Japanese government also anticipates that its successful bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games will bring a healthy boost to the country’s economy. So far for Japan this year, the overall economy has grown an encouraging 3.8%, the stock market has climbed 40%, and is close to ending 15 consecutive years of deflation
