India round-up (Update - May 2013)
Executive summary

This is an updated edition of this report which was last published in April 2012.

This report provides subscribers with a detailed update on the exhibition industry in India. India is a high-growth market with plenty of potential for B2B exhibitions and international organisers continue to invest in the market with new launches and acquisitions.

In 2012, BSG recorded 138 B2B trade fairs in the country with 810,750 m2 sold. In 2011, there were 134 B2B trade fairs in India representing 789,000 m2 sold. Measured based on net m2 sold, that puts India fifth in the region behind China, Japan, Hong Kong and Korea. With a population of over 1.2 billion and a GDP in 2011 of US$1.7 trillion, the growth potential remains substantial.

The scale of the opportunity in India is heightened by the fact that it is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In 2012, India’s GDP growth was 6.2% and it is forecast to be 6.3% in 2013. However, largely due to slower global demands, exports were down 4% in 2012 compared with the year before. An on-going drop in exports could have an impact on India’s B2B exhibitions as many events significantly rely on exports to drive growth.

To put Indian exhibitions in a regional context, in terms of net space sold, India’s exhibition industry remains smaller than both that of Hong Kong and Korea. Clearly, there is plenty of growth upside in the Indian industry. Taken from another angle, India’s GDP represents 8.2% of the total Asian GDP in 2011, while India’s share of the net space sold in Asia is just 5.0%.
