China Battery Marketplace Analysed in New Research Study by SinoMarketInsight Published at MarketPublishers.com24 Jul 2014 • by Natalie Aster
LONDON – Driven by the demand from emerging electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage equipment downstream sectors, the Chinese battery market’s size is expected to grow at a rate of over 8% over the next two years. Lithium ion battery, lead-acid battery, nickel-metal hydride battery and nickel-cadmium battery and are the most widely used chemical batteries in China; of which the former two have considerable market size and stable demand from downsteam sectors.
The country’s yield of lead-acid batteries generated 205 million KVAh as of 2013, a y-o-y increase of just under 15.5%. In the short run, the lead-acid battery industry, however, is expected to enter the final consolidation stage, as the lead-acid battery and secondary lead industries with their backward production capacities have not passed through environmental scrutiny as well as do not comply with access conditions and therefore are subject to elimination. In 2013, China’s shipments of lithium batteries reached 4.768 billion units, up just over 18.5% y-o-y. Containing no heavy metals like cadmium and lead as well as having high specific energy, lithium battery is regarded as a ‘green product’, and, for this reason, it is promoted by different countries and widely used in EVs and equipment for energy storage. However, in the longer term, the technological breakthroughs and declining costs will be essential for widespread use of lithium batteries.
