Unit Sales for Antimicrobial CVCs to Increase Significantly, Reports iData Research

18 Sep 2012 • by Natalie Aster

The leading global authority in medical device market intelligence, rise in the European use of power-injectable peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and changes in the types of central venous catheters (CVCs) and peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVs) available, are causing changes in the vascular delivery catherter markets.

According to the new report “European Markets for Peripheral Vascular Devices 2012” by iData Research, CVCs were the second-most-popular type of indwelling catheter used among the fifteen countries studied in¬depth. The increasing size of the patient pool requiring the use of long-term, indwelling catheters is expected to increase the unit sales for antimicrobial CVCs significantly higher than those for conventional CVCs by 2018. However, the report highlights that the use of PIVCs remains very high across Europe and manufacturers are lowering the price of all their CVC devices in an attempt to make them more economically appealing and shift habits in device use. These decreases in price are causing a general slowing of the CVC market, which is expected to start declining in overall market value by 2020.

“The European PIVC market is similar to the CVC market; a mature and stable one characterized by high volume and low prices.” says Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “Due to the high volume of units sold, penetration from competing products is not expected to have a large impact on unit growth.” Much of the growth in this market is due to the high adoption rate of more expensive safety PIVCs which can cost as much as eight times the price of conventional ones.

The market for PICCs has grown rapidly over the last few years, and this trend is expected to continue. PICCs are devices that are used for intravenous access to facilitate the delivery of chemotherapy drugs, antibiotic therapies or parenteral nutrition (intravenous feeding). The report estimates that over the next four years, the majority of PICCs sold in Europe will be power-injectable devices, with the unit share expected to almost double from 2011 to 2018. It states that there are several technological advancements that have been made in the PICC market in recent years that are changing the make up of the market and driving growth.
