Sales of Inhalers Driving Respiratory Device Market Reached $44 Billion Last Year, Estimates Kalorama

15 Jun 2012 • by Natalie Aster

Driven by an increased incidence of respiratory disease and an aging population, the respiratory market was estimated to have reached $44.2 billion in 2011. The healthcare market research publisher says the largest component of this market is respiratory inhalers and associated therapeutic pharmaceuticals, reflecting about 77% of the total. These findings were made in Kalorama Information’s latest research report «World Market for Respiratory Devices».

“The bulk of the market growth is expected to arise from an increasing incidence of COPD worldwide and from innovative products entering the market,” said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information.

“The market will also grow thanks to the shifting trend towards the use of home care products for the graying population across the globe.”

Products that comprise the worldwide respiratory device market include inhalers, nebulizers, airway and mask equipment, sleep apnea equipment, oxygen therapy equipment and ventilators, medical humidifiers, and respiratory measurement devices. Kalorama’s report is clear that most of the multi-billion dollar device market consists of sales of inhaler devices which contain pharmaceuticals that are administered through the inhaler. Dry powder inhalers (DPI) consist of pharmacologically active powder as an aggregate of fine micronized particles in an inhalation chamber. They require the patient’s own breathing for the drug delivery to occur, making them unsuitable for some patients but beneficial for most.

The dollar volume of inhalers, Kalorama notes, shouldn’t disguise the growth opportunities in other device categories. The report indicates that some respiratory device areas will see sales growth of 7-9% in the next five years. “The lion’s share of the market is inhalers, but there are other devices that are going to drive revenue growth as well, and we detail these in the report,” Carlson said.
