IPTV Market Leaders Report - December 2011 (Fall/Winter Edition)

17 Feb 2012 • by Natalie Aster

Which IPTV systems and software companies are leading each of the six IPTV market segments: Access Systems, Video Headend (Encoder) Systems (VHE), Video-on-Demand Server Software (VOD), Set-top Boxes (STB), Middleware (MW), and Content Protection/Digital Rights Management (CP/DRM)? The new report “IPTV Market Leaders Report - December 2011 (Fall/Winter Edition)” by MRG Multimedia Research Group identifies the answer.

The geographic breakdown in this report includes Asia, Europe, North America (NA), and Rest-of-the-World (ROW) regions, as well as overall “global” leaders. Over 100 IPTV Vendors are identified and tracked for this report. Market positions are measured by tracking actual numbers of “active” IPTV subscribers that are using (or being supported by) each Vendor’s products. The one exception is the VHE numbers, which are based on the number of live video channels supported by the IPTV Operators.

In addition, this report tracks the growth prospects for each Vendor company, based on the number of active customers it has who are “significant deployments.” Service Provider is identified as a “significant deployment” if it is currently among the top 25 IPTV Operators in terms of total IPTV subscribers. A list of the top 25 IPTV Operators can be found in Table 1-3. For every Vendor, tables are included that count the Vendor’s significant IPTV deployments, both globally and within each geographic region.

As mentioned earlier, IPTV subscribers primarily make up the foundation for measuring IPTV Vendor rankings. The one exception is in measuring the Video Headend (encoder) segment, where market positions are based on the reported number of IPTV (Broadcast) channels provided (rather than subscribers) using each Vendor’s products. Since a Video Headend may support two thousand or two million subscribers, the number of channels is a much better measure of a Vendor’s market position. However, since these numbers don’t change very often, the VHE segment doesn’t see many changes or may not reflect actual market conditions because some historical relationships may exceed newer ones.
