Coffee and Ready-to-Drink Coffee in the U.S., 7th Edition

26 Dec 2011 • by Natalie Aster

Coffee is a global commodity consumed worldwide, and its pricing is highly volatile. Coffee is the No. 2 traded commodity in the United States behind oil. As a crop, its prices fluctuate depending on weather and growing conditions, economic and political conditions in coffeeproducing countries, and export quotas. Coffee bean prices also shift with supply and demand, foreign currency fluctuations, and the commodities market. Prices for raw coffee beans continued to soar in 2011 following price increases during 2010.

According to the report “Coffee and Ready-to-Drink Coffee in the U.S., 7th Edition” by Packaged Facts on the foodservice and retail sides of the U.S. coffee market alike, the key to success in the nearterm future will be a marketing plan that both responds to and helps to drive the daily value choices consumers make. But be aware that “value” is not purely a price proposition: quality and convenience also play into consumers’ decisions.
