The South African Defense Industry - Market Opportunities and Entry Strategies Analyses and Forecasts to 2015

19 Sep 2011 • by Natalie Aster

The South African defense market, though not particularly large, is growing moderately. Post-apartheid, the country witnessed a significant decline in its defense budget, both in terms of value and as a percentage of GDP. Furthermore, the lack of military aggression by neighboring countries and very low terrorist activity levels has contributed to the recent overall reductions in defense spending.

By 2015, iCD Research estimates that South Africa’s defense expenditure as a percentage of its gross domestic product (GDP) will rise from its 2010 level of 1.2% to 1.5%. Currently, 80.8% of the defense budget is allocated for revenue expenditure, and the remaining for capital expenditure, a trend that is not expected to vary significantly by 2015.

The report “The South African Defense Industry - Market Opportunities and Entry Strategies Analyses and Forecasts to 2015” by iCD Research offers insights into market opportunities and entry strategies adopted by foreign OEMs to gain a market share in the South African defense industry.

Capital expenditure for the South African air force is expected to overtake army capital expenditure from 2011 onwards, a trend that is expected to continue to 2015. In the forecast period, air force capital expenditure is expected to increase by 120% and navy capital expenditure is expected to grow over 100%.
