Home Furniture Market in Russia and Development Forecast for 2011-201414 Jul 2011 • by Natalie Aster
In 2010, home furniture production in Russia increased by 4.1%. Before the crisis the average annual rate of production growth exceeded 30%, but in year-end 2009 there was a decline by more than 20%. Although the annual growth rate of 4% is not significant for the furniture market, it shows that the positive changes are taking place.
Increased production was registered in the most of home furniture market segments. The major decrease was registered in large and valuable furnishings, which often expect made-to-measure job (living room sets, kitchen furniture). The demand for upholstered furniture, chairs and other furniture for sitting was growing faster than for other types.
An increase was registered not only for domestic manufacture, but also for imports. Upholstered furniture supplies increased by more than 30%, other furniture types almost doubled those made in 2009. The amount of importable kitchen and bedroom furniture remained virtually unchanged. It should be pointed out that home producers gave up a few percentage points to ‘the foreigners’ after all.
On the contrary, exports decreased. With regard to exports structure, the share of the upholstered furniture noticeably contracted to 5.3 from 9.6% % in 2009, kitchen and bedroom furniture exports also slowed down. Share of exports in production volume reduced to 7.7%.
According to Express-Obzor’s forecast, home furniture market recovery will continue for the next few years. The expected market growth in 2011-2012 is 8-9%.
