INJECTABLE DRUG DELIVERY MARKET
In a non-competitive market where no similar drug is available a company may choose to launch a drug in simple administration form in the initial stage. However, once the drug reaches patent expiry the same drug may be launched with certain unique qualities such as special form of administration.
For example, interferon alfa, which is one of the well-known and prevalent therapy for treatment of hepatitis-C was earlier launched in the vials either in liquid or lyophilized form. However, with increasing competition several product improvements were launched in the form of prefilled syringes for the liquid formulations and multi dose pen injectors for lyophilized formulations.
DRUG DELIVERY FORMULATION TECHNOLOGIES
Nano sized drug delivery technologies are primarily used as a mode to achieve sustained release of any drug into the body. Apart from this small size of liposomal systems, polymeric micelles and microspheres enable easy penetration into the cell. This characteristic has been primarily used to improve dissolution and solubility characteristics of water insoluble drugs.
From the application side, the market for drug delivery formulation technologies is driven by increasing need for sustained release and drug delivery in wide range of application areas. The oncology therapeutics segment forms the largest share of the nano-enabled drug delivery systems. This is followed by CNS drugs, anti-infective and anti-inflammatory drugs. The cardio vascular therapeutics segment forms the smallest segment of the market.
