Tellabs is a vendor in transition. The company, under a relatively new CEO, has been pursuing a new direction for its broadband access product portfolio to suit current market conditions. Revenues for both fiber- and copper-based platforms within the access business subsegment declined in 2008. One of Tellabs’ most significant decisions to date in the broadband arena has been to withdraw from selling GPON to Verizon since it was not profitable. The company remains a BPON market leader, but BPON volumes are on the decline. Since reshaping its FTTx portfolio to target non-traditional users and non-American markets, Tellabs has won business with the US government and in Eastern Europe. The success of this strategy with new and enhanced products will be crucial for Tellabs’ future in broadband access.
