About Precise Biometrics AB

Precise Biometrics AB engages in the development, marketing, and sale of biometric security solutions for authentication, using fingerprints in combination with smart cards in Europe and the United States. The company’s solutions replace keys, PIN codes, and passwords and increase the integrity of ID cards and passports.

The company’s subsidiaries include: Precise Biometrics Inc. and Precise Biometrics Services AB. Through its subsidiary Fyrplus Teknik, Precise Biometrics can deliver biometrics solutions on the Scandinavian market based, for example on fingerprint, iris and facial recognition. The product line includes systems for access control to buildings, computers and networks and for integration into ID cards and passports.

The company principally operates in two geographic areas – the Americas, which deal with both the North and South American markets, and EMEA, including Europe, Middle East & Africa.

The company offers software and hardware and provides consulting services directly to security-conscious customer segments, principally in Europe and the U.S. The range of products includes systems for access control to buildings, computer logon systems and for integration into various types of electronic ID documentation, such as passports. The combination of fingerprint scanning with smart cards preserves the personal integrity of users, because the fingerprint is stored and matched onboard the card and never stored in a database beyond the control of the individual.

Products

The company’s in-house-developed algorithm, precise BioMatch has been developed and refined to meet the market needs for security, user-friendliness, personal integrity and interoperability with other fingerprint technology.

Precise BioMatch relies on the finger’s most characteristic areas, which can be stored in digital form on a computer, a server or a smart card. When the same finger is placed on the fingerprint reader sensor, the fingerprint is compared (matched) with the stored fingerprint and verified. Precise BioMatch is embedded on the company’s hardware and software products and is specifically optimized for a combination of fingerprint and smart cards, Precise Match-on- Card.

The use of Precise Match-on-Card technology improved both system security and personal integrity because the fingerprint information is stored on a smart card. This information can then be matched against the cardholder’s fingerprint on the card itself, without the stored fingerprint information ever leaving the card. Precise Match-on-Card can therefore replace or serve as a complement to PIN codes for access to sensitive data on the smart card.

Precise Biometrics focuses its operations on developing, marketing and principally selling fingerprint-based solutions, within the product areas: IT Security, which access to computers and networks; Physical Access, which access to buildings and premises; Embedded Solutions, with integration of the technology in handheld computers and point-of-sale terminals; and Smart card solutions that offers national ID cards, electronic passports and company cards. Within all product areas, the company has packaged products in the form of hardware, as well as software packages, including development tools and licenses to use the company’s technology.

IT Security: Within the IT Security product area, the hardware consists of fingerprint readers and combined fingerprint and smart card readers primarily for access to computers and networks. Both are also available integrated in keyboards or in the form of PC cards for laptop computers. A prototype for a new product was developed, Precise 250 MC. Software within the product range is sold as development tools and licenses to application developers and system integrators who want to integrate Precise BioMatch.

Physical Access: Within the Physical Access product area, the hardware consists of fingerprint readers for physical access, Precise BioAccess, intended for contactless smart cards. A prototype for a new product was developed this year, Precise BioAccess 200. This is a new version of Precise BioAccess, with improvements in performance, functionality and e

SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

Porter Five Forces Analysis

The Porter’s five forces analysis studies the industry of operation and helps the company find new sources of competitive advantage. The analysis surveys an industry through five major questions:

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

VRIO stands for Value, Rarity, Imitability, Organization. This analysis helps to evaluate all company’s resources and capabilities and bring them together into one aggregate table that includes:

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
  • Intangible resources
    • Human
    • Innovation and Creativity
    • Reputation
  • Organizational capabilities

The result of the analysis gives a clear picture of company’s competitive and economic implications, answering the questions if the resources mentioned above are:

  • Valuable?
  • Rare?
  • Costly to imitate?
  • Organized properly?
