In the majority of cases, tooth loss is caused by periodontal disease and not tooth decay or caries. If not treated early, periodontal disease can become severe enough to not only permanently damage natural teeth, but also cause bone and hard tissue loss. Bone loss can also be caused by tooth extractions, accidents, chemicals and aging. Until the advent of bone graft materials, bone loss was considered permanent. The loss of bone can cause discomfort and prevent patients from receiving dental implants.

Bone grafting procedures using bone graft substitutes (BGSs) are performed to repair bone loss. Bone grafting can be performed during periodontal procedures in an attempt to save a tooth, or during a dental implant procedure to replace a tooth. Tissue engineering products and dental membranes can be used in conjunction with BGSs to increase the rate and extent of bone regeneration.

Dental bone graft substitutes are used for packing the space left by missing bone and for stimulating the growth of new bone. In addition to these functions, the use of BGS has proven to be an efficient way to enhance bonding, healing and longevity in traditional dental implants.

The volume of BGS used in a bone grafting procedure depends on the location and size of the bone that needs repair. In general, far less bone graft material is used in a dental procedure compared to an orthopedic bone grafting procedure.
