The capnography monitoring devices market, a part of the patient monitoring industry, is characterized as a large under-penetrated market globally. Worldwide, the capnography market is dominated by the US and Europe. However, the emerging countries such as China, India and Russia among others have recently started witnessing a spurt in the demand for quality health services, thereby registering a demand for monitoring devices. Over the past few years, an aging demographic pattern coupled with increasing global pollution and rising cases of obesity have led to a growth in breathing-related illnesses, thereby boosting the growth of this segment. These factors, combined with rising awareness for patient safety are expected to drive the need for capnography devices in the forthcoming years.

Capnography has been commercially available since the past twenty years. However, it was only recently that the device started being used in other critical areas of the hospital as well as in the emergency medical services. Rising patient safety concerns led to the incorporation of new medical standards which drove the demand for these devices. Additionally, clinical studies supporting capnography’s importance in improving patient safety also aided the market's development. Despite the present economic slowdown and lack of education, the market is expected to register growth on account of continuing cost effective innovations, expansion into new market segments and rising health and environment issues.

Geographically, in terms of revenue, the US and European capnography market is growing on the back of favorable demographic factors as well as increasing number of mandates issued by professional medical bodies. The emerging economies offer huge growth potential on account of their large populations, rising per capita incomes and a growing middle-class.

Oridion is regarded as the global leader in the capnography monitoring market, followed by Novametrix/ Respironics and Welch Allyn. Globally, the three major capnography manufacturers account for more than 80% of the total worldwide market. However, in the past four to five years, the market has been witnessing increasing consolidation, wherein the OEM clients such as Philips and others are acquiring the OEM manufacturers in order to enhance their market presence.

The report analyzes the various segments of the capnography monitoring devices industry and assesses opportunities available for the players. The drivers, trends and challenges for the industry have also been analyzed. Further, the report highlights the positioning and strategies of the major global capnography equipment manufacturers – Oridion, Novametrix (subsidiary of Respironics/ Philips) and Welch Allyn.
